What is Reiki? According to the International Center for Reiki Training - A Brief Overview Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy." A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.
What is Holistic Massage? A therapeutic massage that integrates both western and non-western healing traditions. Therapeutic bodywork/massage is based on the knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology to address soft tissue dysfunction, stress related conditions and energy imbalances.
What is Polarity Therapy? According to the American Polarity Therapy Association, Polarity Therapy is a gentle, holistic method of treatment, applicable to many health problems and also useful in maintaining health. Central to Polarity Therapy is the concept of a life energy, which is in constant pulsation from positive to negative poles via a neutral position, creating fields and energetic lines of force. This creates an energetic "template" for the physical body, termed "The Wireless Anatomy of Man" by Dr. Randolph Stone, the founder of this therapy. Although the life energy shares some properties with electricity, one should not follow the analogy too closely, as it has many properties which differ.
Disease is a process which occurs when the life energy is blocked or out of balance. It could be said that there is only one disease, that of disturbance of the energetic system, with different outcomes depending on the nature of the disturbance, and where it occurs. To overcome these problems Polarity therapy uses a system of gentle bodywork supported by a specific set of exercises (Polarity Yoga), advice on diet and nutrition, and counseling.
It is this energetic approach which differentiates Polarity Therapy from many other forms of bodywork. Some techniques are derived from Osteopathy and Chiropractic but use minimal mechanical force, relying instead on the life energy to do the work. It differs from Shiatsu and Acupuncture in the energy theory used, Polarity therapy owing more to the Indian Ayurvedic system.
Since Polarity Therapy recognizes illness arising from imbalance or energy blockage described above, the therapist will be looking beyond the symptoms the client may present for the real causes of the complaint. Often the presenting symptoms are not the real cause. To this end, most therapists will begin by taking a wide-ranging case history, aiming to pin-point the fundamental elemental imbalances. Therapists may also make a structural assessment also, similar to that performed by Osteopaths and Chiropractors.
The bodywork involves many gentle techniques, for example, cranial holds, rocking movements, some techniques similar to reflexology, and some techniques derived from Osteopathy and Chiropractic, but with an energetic rather than manipulative focus. Bipolar contact holds link energetically and functionally related areas of the body to facilitate the movement of body energy. Both light and deep contacts may be used, but forceful manipulations are not performed in Polarity therapy. Polarity Therapy is suitable for elderly and frail clients due to its gentle healing protocols.
The doctrine of "Energy follows thought" or "As we think, so we are" is adopted by Polarity therapists - the foundation of our health imbalances are often derived from our processes of thought and emotional patterns. Polarity therapists will often help clients to become more aware of these areas which are detrimental to their health. Often shining the light of awareness onto these areas is sufficient to begin the process of change. Also symptoms are thought of as messages which can show us areas of our life and actions that require attention. Ignoring or suppressing symptoms may result in more serious problems later.
Above all illness is not thought of as an "enemy" to be "vanquished" - the image, for example, of the "invading" microorganism, but rather a complex pattern of energetic disharmony involving many factors. Through its holistic approach, Polarity therapy allows a person the opportunity to realign with the true self and to restore health and balance.
What can I expect in a typical Polarity Therapy session?
In a typical Polarity Therapy session, the practitioner assesses energetic attributes using observation, interview methods and physical palpation. Polarity Therapy Sessions usually take 60-90 minutes, does not require disrobing, and involves soft touch incorporating some rocking, as well as, point specific touch.
Energetic Touch is the work Polarity Practitioners perform with clients. The initial interview and subsequent dialog throughout the session allows the practitioner to hold space and listen to the energy in people’s words – an energetic connection of the ethers. In the session, the practitioner supports the client in increasing self-awareness of subtle energetic sensations, which are often experienced as tingling, warmth, expansion or wavelike movement. Physical touch contact may be light (Sattvic), medium (Rajasic), or firm (Tamasic). The experience of the bodywork is often deeply relaxing and may also lead to emotional releases such as tears or laughter. The bodywork aspect of the work is difficult to describe, it needs to be experienced. The results of Polarity Therapy sessions vary, and may include profound relaxation, an understanding of energetic patterns and their implications, and relief from numerous specific problematic situations such as hypertension, anxiety attacks and breathing disorders.
What is Chakra Balancing? Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means "wheel" and refers to the seven energy centers in our body. The chakras regulate the flow of energy throughout our bodies. What is Healing with Stones and Crystals? Healing by incorporating Reiki with the natural vibrational energy and properties of crystals.
What is Shamanism? As defined by the Foundation of Shamanic Studies, "Over tens of thousands of years, our ancient ancestors all over the world discovered how to maximize human abilities of mind and spirit for healing and problem-solving. The remarkable system of methods they developed is today known as "shamanism," a term that comes from a Siberian tribal word for its practitioners: "shaman" (pronounced SHAH-mahn). Shamans are a type of medicine man or woman especially distinguished by the use of journeys to hidden worlds otherwise mainly known through myth, dream, and near-death experiences." With the help of my spirit guides and the use of a drum or rattle, I enter a meditative state to "journey" through the portal of non-ordinary reality to problem solve and facilitate healing on a spiritual, emotional and physical level.
